Sumner County

Sumner County is located in Middle Tennessee along the northern boundary of the state, on the border with Kentucky. The Cumberland River was important to early trade and transportation, as it merges with the Ohio River to the west. Sumner County is in the Greater Nashville metropolitan area.

Gallatin's town square is rich with an abundance of history, featuring a central courthouse and 19th century buildings and churches. Other historic attractions in the area include The Palace Theater, Trousdale Place Museum, Bledsoe Fort, and many historic homes including Cragfont, Wynnewood, and Rosemont. Bledsoe State Park is an excellent recreational spot for families, with camping, lake access and excellent hiking. Hendersonville has approximately 32 square miles of land and 26 miles of shoreline on Old Hickory Lake. From outdoors enthusiasts to antique collectors to history buffs, Sumner County offers something for almost any interest.

THINGS TO DO

Old Hickory Lake
Whether you bring your own boat or prefer to rent one of our pontoons, canoes, or jet skis, you'll have a great time exploring the secluded coves, shady banks and wide-open spaces with more than 440 miles of shoreline. The lake has become a major stop on several fishing tournaments list. It's also a perfect place for picnics, leisurely walks along the shoreline or just watching the sailboats and people. Both Gallatin and Hendersonville have parks along the lakefront with picnic areas, walking/biking trails and more. The visitors center is on Rockland Road in Hendersonville. Also on Old HIckory Lake is Bledsoe Creek State Park, offering camping, walking trails, picnic shelters, ball field, playground and boat ramps.

Bledsoe's Fort Historical Park
Named for the mineral springs and licks so prominent in regional history and prehistory, the Bledsoe's Lick Historical Association has operated, managed, and preserved Wynnewood State Historic Area, including several important historical buildings, landmarks and historical sites:

  • The restored Irish Cottage of Hugh Rogan
  • The mineral springs and lick
  • Thomas Sharp Spencer monument
  • Portions of the ancient Native American town
  • The archaeological location of Isaac Bledsoe's 1780 fort
  • The restored Nathanial Parker cabin

Palace Theater
Located in Historic Downtown Gallatin, the completely restored Palace Theater is the oldest silent movie theater still standing in Tennessee. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and hosts a variety of shows, movies and events.

Five Chefs Restaurant, Coffee Shop and Occasions Gift Shop
Five Chefs Restaurant is located in the Historic Gossett House at 103 W. McGlothlin Street in Portland with a coffee shop and the Occasions Gift Shop. Known for its fabulous desserts such as Oreo cake, apple caramel bundt cake and German chocolate cake, you'll find a relaxed atmosphere with friendly service, unique gifts, home decor, ladies boutique, children's apparel, antique furniture ... to mention a few. The desserts are made daily and brought in fresh to the restaurant. The eatery features five different chefs and each day the menu offers something different.

The Sumner County Museum
The Sumner County Museum honors the rich history of the county. Musical roots, the Sumner County Drive In, education, farming, the military, photography and medicine are all represented in a variety of museum exhibits. The basement of the museum is filled with antique cars from 1909 to the 1950s. The museum is also home to 250,000 locally found Native American artifacts.

Memory Lane
Memory Lane, which is just down the street from the Old Country Store in downtown Westmoreland, is probably one of the best-kept secrets in Sumner County. Open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the museum literally takes visitors back in time during the heyday of Westmoreland. There is no charge for this trip. Life-sized wax figures play poker around the table in the saloon, a customer whittles in the corner chair in the general store and a guest registers in the hotel and waits in the elegant lobby. Rose Mont
If you’re a fan of Gone with the Wind, then Rose Mont is worth a stop. This antebellum plantation house was built in the 1830s by Jo Conn Guild, a judge, lawyer, author, soldier, horseman and legislator. Rose Mont is at 810 S. Water Ave. in Gallatin.

Rock Castle
At the end of a residential road in Hendersonville, backing up to the Cumberland River and Old Hickory Lake is one of the most notable pieces of Hendersonville’s past, Rock Castle. Now owned by the state of Tennessee, Gen. Daniel Smith, a war veteran and one of the most prominent surveyors of his time, built Rock Castle in the late 1700s. It is made of limestone rock, quarried on the land grant Smith received for service to the country.

Monthaven/Hendersonville Art Gallery
A two-story wood home built in the 1860s, Monthaven is now the home of the Hendersonville Arts Council and Art Gallery. The historic home features art exhibits and shows including some of the areas top artists and most talented school children. The home and grounds also feature the annual Showcase of Arts and Crafts and a showing of original quilts made by local quilters who are part of the Lakeshore Quilters Guild. In addition, numerous art classes are conducted at the home. During the summer months of June through August the grounds are also home to a concert series the third Sunday of the month. Families are welcome to wander through the historic home, which still features some of the original hardwood floors.

Cragfont
Considered the finest mansion house on the Tennessee frontier, Cragfont, was completed in 1802. It was built by General James Winchester, frontiersman, soldier, politician and one of the founders of Memphis. The mansion contains a ballroom on the second floor, the first in the Tennessee country. Andrew Jackson & Sam Houston were frequent guests at the parties hosted by the Winchesters.The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The gardens and gazebo overlook a small pond, and a gift shop is located on the property. Special events, weddings, and parties by appointment.

Long Hollow Winery
This unique winery is owned and operated by Grand Ole Opry Star Stu Phillips and his wife, Aldona. Featuring dry, semi-sweet, and sweet red and white wines, our varieties include Blackberry, Blush, Chancellor, Chardonnay, Concord, Muscadine, Niagra, and several exclusive blends. Coming soon are Merlot and Cabernet. A personalized tour and concert are available for large groups and special occasions by appointment only. Complimentary wine tasting is offered daily. The winery is located in a modern reproduction of a monastery visited by Stu as a youngster, and contains a gift shop adjacent to the tasting room.
